Sports Day 2013

We held our sports day this afternoon with the weather holding off to allow us to complete the event. There were events ranging from obstacle courses, sprints, standing jumps, javelin, sprints and marathon. The overall winners were Ty Gwyn.

Squash Wales visit

Two coaches from Squash Wales visited the school this morning to hold a squash workshop with our juniors. They brought along two mobile squash net walls and gave a brief explanation of the sport. The pupils were then allowed to have a go at the sport. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed these sessions.

Here's some video action of our session:

Alternate chapters to Morris Gleitzman's Toad Away

We have been writing an alternative chapter to Morris Gleitzman's 'Toad Away'. The pupils needed to come up with their own animal characters. We then chose the chapter where Goliath had to be rescued from a supermarket after launching an assault on human pizzas... They then had to choose their own scenarios and plan their own chapter.

Arguments against cane toads...

We have been reading through articles that argue in favour of killing cane toads due to them being a nuisance, and some in support of them, suggesting that perhaps they were being treated harshly.

We then had to plan and write an article using the quotes that we highlighted to support our argument and reference them using a scaled down version of the Harvard referencing system.

We did shared and guided writing for each paragraph and generated a success criteria to suggest what should go where and why.

Star orienteering (Number course)

We used our brand new mapped and marked out orienteering course this morning to do a bit of star orienteering. The school was recently surveyed and a scaled map was produced. Last week, a teacher from another school, Mr Thomas, came to help Mr Roberts locate the control points and secure them to fixed locations on the school grounds.

After a brief introduction into the sport, something which we have been working on all this half term, we went out, were given our course (the number course) and had a timed orienteering race.

Pupils were given a letter to start off with and when they located it on the map, went to the location and noted down the number on their control point they returned and selected another random letter. Everyone ended up having the correct answers!

Our times were as follows:

11 minutes: Shani and Jay

17 minutes: Jordan Wa and Antoine

18 minutes: Chloe and Mikey

18 minutes: Joshua and Jared

19 minutes: Tawfiq and Maya

20 minutes: Rosie and Edward

22 minutes: William and Charles

23 minutes: Sophie and Rebecca

24 minutes: Ben and Catherine
