This term our
topic is Fallen Fields. This is a topic that focuses on World War One and has
been chosen to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of the
First World War. We will be developing our history, geography and personal and
social skills when studying this topic. We hope to gain knowledge of how and
why the war started, what major events took place and answer many
pupil-generated questions on the subject.
We are then going
to put all of our newly developed skills and knowledge into place to focus on a
special project. We are going to research and investigate the names of the
fallen soldiers from WW1 that appear on Llanharan’s war memorial. We will try
to find out: who they were; when they were born/died; where they lived; how
they died; their role in the war and much more. If any parents or grandparents
have any connections with those named on the memorial, please let us know.
This culmination
of this topic will be two performances of a special concert to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the end of WW1. The first will be a class
performance for parents while the second one will be a return journey to
Llanharan RFC to put on the performance as part of the Royal British Legion
memorial concert.
Our literacy focus
this year will be William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We will be studying
the play using drama techniques and the Bard’s original language.
Our PE day will be
Tuesday where we will be developing our gymnastic skills. Can children bring
shorts and t-shirts.
Reading books and
records have been handed out, with pupils expected to bring them into school
every day. They will be listened to reading, at least once a week as part of
our guided reading sessions.
Pupils will soon
be receiving their reading journals. These have a selection of comprehension
based activities, one of which is to be completed every week based on their
home reading book. Pupils should choose an activity from the first column, then
pick another one the following week from the second column that is attached to
it. They should make their way across the grid and after four activities,
should go back to a new activity on the first column.
Pupils will be receiving
new Studyladder passwords as soon as possible and homework will be set online
every Friday.
