Gwenllian's Warrior speech

This half term we will be looking at the story of Gwenllian, the warrior princess. We have already tried to draw what we think she looks like from descriptions.

This week we have been trying to put ourselves in the position of Gwenllian, standing in front of her army, trying to rally them into battle.

We studied famous speeches by Barack Obama, JFK, Martin Luther King Junior and Winston Churchill to identify qualities needed to inspire people. From these we came up with a list of musts:
  • Repetition
  • Imperatives
  • Emotive language
  • Rhetorical questions
  • A sense of togetherness
We hot seated (well, stood) as Gwenllian, shouting out some rhetorical questions.

The pupils then wrote their speeches, following these musts, with a few suggested extras to improve their writing:
