War Horse - Captain Stewart stream of consciousness
We have been learning how to uses dashes and hyphens this week including using them for suspense, subordinate clauses, repetition and after thoughts. We have also been learning about verbal irony.
Taking the Chapter 8 speech by Captain Stewart where he says, "What a ghastly waste. Maybe now when they see this they’ll understand that you can’t send horses into wire and machine-guns. Maybe now they’ll think again" we experimented with stream of consciousness and wrote some angry, rant filled sentences. Here are some of our early examples.

Bevin Boy Diaries
We have been learning about the role of Bevin Boys during World War Two this half term. To complete this mini topic we were giving the challenge of taking on the role of a Bevin Boy who had been moved from his home to work in coal mine in South Wales. Our particular literacy focus was to write a diary entry using interesting topic based synonyms and rhetorical questions to express our frustration and despair with the situation we were in.
Here are some of our efforts:

Super Hero Cartoons inspired by Huw Aaron
After our workshop with Huw Aaron, Year 4/5/6 were challenged to come up with their own super heroes. Huw set them the challenge in class and announced that he would choose his favourite and draw his own interpretation of it.
And here is the winner!
The winning superhero is... Mr Moustachio! With his flying boomerang 'taches! @lps140club @intofilm_edu @llanharanps pic.twitter.com/8GBaZHRBnM

Balloon doodlebugs
We tested the effect of adding modifications to balloons. Linked in with our World War Two topic we looked at how doodlebugs worked and what designs they had.
Each group was given the opportunity to modify their balloons before they were attached to a straw harness on a cotton zip line.
We then measured the distance each one traveled.
