A new fantasy football league season is about to begin on www.schoolsfl.com. The start date is October 18th, so not long to get registered to join. At Llanharan Primary School we are welcoming and indeed encouraging entries from pupils, staff, friends and family. 

It is a perfect opportunity for pupils to use financial literacy skills and work to a budget, whilst maintaining their management of their teams throughout the year. Will you need to make transfers? Who is going to be your captain? Are any players not performing well enough? Should you change your captain?

Letter to the unknown warrior

As part of our Fallen fields topic we have been learning about the unknown soldier. We have learnt about how he was chosen, where he came from and why he was needed. We then looked at the http://www.1418now.org.uk/letter/ project where people were asked to write letters to the unknown soldier statue located at Paddington station in London.

We discussed what he would see and how he would have been able to witness the world changing year after year from the one he knew in 1918. We also asked the question, 'If you could write a letter to the Unknown Soldier, what would you ask?'

Here are some of our efforts:

Highwayman - a new verse!

As a class this week we have been writing new verses at the end of Alfred Noyes's The Highwayman. We have looked at what happened to the lives of key characters such as the Landlord and Tim the Ostler after the events at the end of the poem. We started off by hot-seating the characters to see how their emotions were affected by their actions.

As a class we wrote a whole class shared write of a new verse to look at the impact on the events in the poem on one of the Redcoats. Here is our effort:

Hedd Wyn - Rhyfel

Our Welsh poem for this half term is Hedd Wyn's 'Rhyfel'. We are going to be learning this poem throughout the term and finding out about the author and the poem's meaning. The aim is to be fluent in our oral reading of the poem by the end of term without the need of the words.

Here is the poem:

Rhyfel

Gwae fi fy myw mewn oes mor ddreng,
A Duw ar drai ar orwel pell;
O'i ôl mae dyn, yn deyrn a gwreng,
Yn codi ei awdurdod hell.

Rugby Sessions with the WRU

Today we welcomed Dean from Pencoed Comprehensive and the WRU who held a rugby session with our Year 5/6 class. We all thoroughly enjoyed learning handling skills and can't wait for our next 3 weeks of rugby!

2014 - 2015

Welcome to a new year with Year 5/6.

This half term we will be studying the topic Fallen Fields - looking at the commemoration of the hundredth year anniversary of the start of World War One. We will be looking at the local connections with the war, the unknown soldier and the role of women during the four year war.

Our author focus is Alfred Noyes The Highwayman.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday - Wednesday will be outdoors (shorts (or tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt and trainers) and Friday's will be indoors (shorts and t-shirts).

Homework will be put on Studyladder on Fridays and we will be updating you with our progress on @lps140club.
