Summer Term news

We are about to start our Summer Term. We are going to be studying the topic 'What a Wonderful World' which has a geography focus. We will be looking at the 7 ancient wonders of the world, the 7 new wonders and researching ideas of what they consider their own wonders to be. We will be using art, design technology, geography and history skills and the topic will culminate in pupils working in groups to promote their Welsh Wonders to make the '7 Wonders of Wales'. We hope that the pupils will be able to present these wonders in a class assembly.

Our literacy focus will be on Morris Gleitzman's Toad Away. Here is a free version of the first chapter. HERE

Our PE days are going to be Monday and Tuesday. On Monday's we will be swimming in Llantrisant Leisure Centre. Boys will need swimming trunks (not shorts) and hats are recommended, girls will need one piece swim suits and swimming hats. We advise all pupil to have goggles. On Tuesday's we will be having hockey lessons from Hockey Wales and football lessons from Cardiff City for the first few weeks of term and we will change gear to athletics as we get closer to sports day at the end of term.

This term also sees the national numeracy and literacy tests. Here is a link with information for parents HERE. Sample materials for the Numeracy tests can be found HERE. Sample materials for the Reading tests can be found HERE.

Here is the video we looked at in class today.

TESCO - Farm to Fork

Last Tuesday we went to TESCO on their Farm to Fork programme as part of our POTIONS topic. We went with one aim in mind - to find out as much about smoothies and fruit as possible.

When we arrived we had a brief wait until we were ready to begin which gave us the perfect opportunity to start interrogating the staff as to what smoothies were the most popular and which fruit were the best ingredients for them.

We then went to the bakery to see how bread was made. The workers there showed us how they operate the huge machinery which was capable of baking massive quantities of bread.

After this we made our way to the Fruit and Veg section. We asked many questions about how fresh the fruit was; how they keep it fresh; which fruits are popular; how much they charge for the fruit etc... This gave us the opportunity to research fruits for our smoothies.

We then went to the fish and cheese sections. The same information was given regarding the freshness, packaging, prices etc... We were then given two different types of cheddar cheese to try on crackers.

Following this we went to the warehouse which was massive! We got to see where all the stock was kept and how it is transferred around the store.  We also saw how the Click and Collect system works.

Finally we went upstairs to do the Weetabix challenge which also allowed us to eat our art!
